Week 15 {Development}

Baby Suarez now measures about 4 inches long, crown to rump, and weighs in at about 2.5 ounces (about the size of an apple). She's busy moving amniotic fluid through her nose and upper respiratory tract, which helps the primitive air sacs in her lungs begin to develop. Her legs are growing longer than her arms now, and she can move all of her joints and limbs. Although her eyelids are still fused shut, she can sense light. There's not much for Baby Suarez to taste at this point, but she is forming taste buds. We may be able to find out whether Baby Suarez a boy or a girl, but it’s still a little early to be 100% sure.

Doctor Visit #4

Today was our fourth visit to our OB/GYN, Dr. Mendelsohn. Our appointment consisted of a physical exam (on me, not Michael), an ultrasound and part 1 of a sequential screener (an elective test).

Today's ultrasound was incredible! Because it has been 7 weeks since our last one, I hadn't realized how much Baby Suarez has developed. What was once a 1cm size spec now has arms and legs and feet and cute little ears!  Getting the shots below, however, was not so easy. Baby Suarez wasn't much for cooperating and the technician had to pull a few tricks to snap some good ones. Our appointment ran a little long, but neither of us complained... it just meant we got to spend a little more time staring at our baby girl or boy!

{P.S., no my name is not Randi Stewart... the technician forgot to change the name on the machine before my ultrasound started!}

Week 14 {Development}

This week's big developments: Baby Suarez can now squint, frown, grimace, pee, and possibly suck his thumb! Thanks to brain impulses, his facial muscles are getting a workout as his tiny features form one expression after another. His kidneys are producing urine, which he releases into the amniotic fluid around him—a process he'll keep up until birth. He can grasp, too, and may even suck his thumb.

In other news: Baby Suarez is stretching out. From head to bottom, he measures 3.5 inches about the size of a lemon—and he weighs 1 1/2 ounces. His body's growing faster than his head, which now sits upon a more distinct neck. By the end of this week, his arms will have grown to a length that's in proportion to the rest of his body. (His legs still have some lengthening to do.) He's starting to develop an ultra-fine, downy covering of hair, called lanugo, all over his body. Baby Suarez’s liver starts making bile this week—a sign that it's doing its job right—and his spleen starts helping in the production of red blood cells. Though you can't feel his tiny punches and kicks yet, his little hands and feet (which now measure about 1/2 inch long) are more flexible and active.

Checking In {Week 13}

How far along? 13 Weeks
Total weight gain: 1 pound total (no change from week 12)
Maternity clothes? Not yet... I am, however, finding more stylish options out there.

Stretch marks? Nope.
Sleep: Could be better :/
Best moment this week:
Miss Anything? Eh. Not really.
Movement:
 Not yet.

Food cravings: None!!!! This was the part I was really looking forward to.
Anything making you queasy or sick: Chicken.
Gender: ???
Labor Signs: No

Symptoms: Headaches, headaches and more headaches.
Belly Button in or out? In.
Wedding rings on or off? On.
Happy or Moody most of the time: Happy! Trying to control my mood swings as much as possible, especially at work!
Looking forward to: The end of the first trimester—for many reasons: less risk, more energy, and most of all getting rid of morning sickness (hopefully!).

Week 13 {Development}

Fingerprints have formed on Baby Suarez’s tiny fingertips, her veins and organs are clearly visible through her still-thin skin, and her body is starting to catch up with her head—which makes up just a third of her body size now. If Baby Suarez is a girl, she now has more than 2 million eggs in her ovaries. Baby Suarez is almost 3 inches long (the size of a medium shrimp) and weighs nearly an ounce.

Doctor Visit #3

Today was our third visit to our doctor and our second ultrasound.

The ultrasound was incredible. It lasted about an hour and 15 minutes and the technician was great... and patient. Baby Suarez was not in the mood to move around much and so we tried a bunch of tricks to get him/her to reciprocate our excitement: I drank an entire glass of the coldest water I've ever tasted, downed a few Tootsie Rolls (which I haven't had since a child, still not sure what the big deal is), ate an entire sucker and then moved on to OJ. Finally, 25 minutes and one bathroom break later Baby Suarez was ready to to show his/her stuff. It was truly amazing to see this life moving about inside of me, especially because I can't yet feel the baby moving. Baby Suarez was doing handstands, kicking its feet and turning around and around. I could have watched it forever. It really was the most rewarding experience of our pregnancy (so far!).

As for the physical check-in, things are going well. I've actually lost weight, which in any other scenario would make me ecstatic but instead initially freaked me out. I was quickly rest assured that losing weight in the first trimester is completely normal and that I will be gaining plenty of weight in the coming months :)

Our next appointment is December 14th and I will be just under 17 weeks. Although this is the day before Grandma's birthday, she won't be getting a surprise just yet-we're still waiting on finding out Baby Suarez's gender. Sorry Grandma (and everyone else!).

Checking In {Week 12}

How far along? 12 weeks.
Total weight gain: 1 whole pound total (-1 from week 11)
Maternity clothes? Not yet... frankly, the thought frightens me.

Stretch marks? Not yet.
Sleep: Not as great as most of trimester 1, but still getting about 10 hours/night
Best moment this week: Our 12 week ultrasound... my heart doubled in size!

Miss Anything? Cheese. Still cheese.
Movement:
 Not yet, but very anxious for this, especially after the last ultrasound.

Food cravings: None!!!! I'm so indifferent about food. I wish I had cravings!
Anything making you queasy or sick: Meat. But this isn't surprising. I generally am turned off by anything animal-related. Seems to be heightened right now.
Gender: ???
Labor Signs: No

Symptoms: Heartburn and indigestion, from just about anything I eat. If the old wives tales are true, Baby Suarez will be born with lots of hair.
Belly Button in or out? In.
Wedding rings on or off? On.
Happy or Moody most of the time: Happy! But this is can be a sore subject at times. Thanks to my ever-changing hormone levels any reaction—happy, sad, crazy, or mean—from me is possible. At this point, overreaction is pretty standard.
Looking forward to: Feeling the baby inside of me. Our ultrasound this week was so crazy—I could see this tiny baby moving around like mad, but still can't feel a thing. I'm very excited to experience the first movements.

Week 12 {Development}

Dramatic enhancements are happening this week: Reflexes. Baby Suarez's fingers will soon begin to open and close, his toes will curl, his eye muscles will clench, and his mouth will make sucking movements. In fact, if Mommy prods her abdomen, Baby Suarez will squirm in response, although Mommy won't be able to feel it. His intestines, which have grown so fast that they protrude into the umbilical cord, will start to move into his abdominal cavity about now, and his kidneys will begin excreting urine into his bladder. From crown to rump, Baby Suarez is just over two inches long (about the size of a lime) and weighs half an ounce.

Checking In {Week 11}

How far along? 11 Weeks
Total weight gain: 2 pounds total (no change from week 10)
Maternity clothes? Ew.
Stretch marks? No sir.
Sleep: Pretty good. It’s been so-so in the early morning hours. Michael gets up for work at 4:00 and I don’t have to be up until 7:00—I’m finding I don’t completely go back to sleep during those 3 hours.
Best moment this week: Telling my friend Sarah. I’ve been telling everyone in person and Sarah and I repeatedly had to reschedule our brunch date. When we finally met up on Sunday I was able to break the exciting news
J
Miss Anything? Afternoon pick-me-ups. I crash around 2:00 (like most people), but can’t rely on any form of caffeine to help out L
Movement: Still too early.
Food cravings: Its so difficult to even eat at this point yet alone crave anything. I yearn for the day I want a pickle.
Anything making you queasy or sick: Eating. I’m sick after each meal.
Gender: ???
Labor Signs: No

Symptoms:
 Just lots of nausea!!!!
Belly Button in or out? In.
Wedding rings on or off? On.
Happy or Moody most of the time: Sick masquerading as happy. While I’m ecstatic about my pregnancy, I’m so sick most of the time that it’s difficult to be really peppy.
Looking forward to: Feeling normal!

Week 11 {Development}

Baby Suarez, just over 1.5 inches long and about the size of a fig, is now almost fully formed. Her hands will soon open and close into fists, tiny tooth buds are beginning to appear under her gums, and some of her bones are beginning to harden.

She's already busy kicking and stretching, and her tiny movements are so effortless they look like water ballet. These movements will become more frequent as her body grows and becomes more developed and functional. Mommy won't feel your baby's acrobatics for another month or two—nor will she notice the hiccupping that may be happening now that her diaphragm is forming.
